The chart below shows the year total return of the South Africa FTSE/JSE All Share Index from 1926 to 2009:

In 2008, the index was down over 30% but up over 40% last year. Since 2000, the index made gains in all years except 2002 and 2008. Riding the commodity bull run, South Africa’s main stock index rose over 40% in 2001, 2009 and over 50% in 2005 and 2006.

I do not readily believe these charts.
As far as I know, stocks only returned to their 1929 levels in 1954.
And according to commentators on CNBC , if you invested in 2000/2001, you made nothing over the next 10 years.
This chart shows the returns for South Africa FTSE/JSE All Share Index. The data shown is correct.
CNBC is talking about US stock markets which earned nothing in the “lost” decade.
Can I have the real index number per year please?

Unfortunately currently I do not have the real index numbers per year for the FTSE/JSE Index. The source I got this chart from did not have one at that time. Let me research into this and if I find the information you are looking for I will post it as an update to this post. Please check back here in a few days.
