From the article:

Companies based outside the U.S. accounted for more than half (14) of the companies ranked on this year’s Top 25 list. The largest portion of overseas companies are the five biotechs based in China (including Hong Kong), followed by two companies based in South Korea; two headquartered in Ireland; and one each based in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, India, and Israel. One company on this list is headquartered in the U.S., but domiciled for tax purposes in the U.K. That leaves just 10 of the Top 25 biotechs that are domiciled in the U.S. in addition to maintaining key operations stateside.

A few observations:

  • The world’s top biotech company based on market cap is the US-based Amgen(AMGN). The next largest firm is Gilead Sciences (GILD) which makes drugs for rare diseases.
  • Danish biotech giant Novo Nordisk(NVO) is the 3rd largest company and is the world’s top diabetes drug maker.
  • Israel-based Teva’s stock (TEVA) used to be a high-flier due to its leadership position in the generic drug market. However in recent years the company is struggling as competition has heated up in the generics industry.

The Berlin Biotech Ecosystem: Infographic

Biotech companies tend to spring up around clusters. In the US, some of the biotech clusters are around Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, etc. Similarly in Europe the Berlin region is one of the major biotech clusters. Factors such as research institutions, universities, venture capital, strong government support, etc. tend to encourage the growth of clusters.

The following infographic shows some of the fascinating details of the Berlin biotech ecosystem:

On The Performance of Fortune’s ‘Buy-and-Forget’ Portfolio

Success with equity investing is not easy. Seemingly solid blue chips can crash any time for any number of reason. Similarly volatility in the markets can appear any time like we are seeing in the global markets in the past few weeks. Trying to time the market is also a fool’s game. So the best way for investors to earn a decent return is to focus on the long-term and hold a well diversified portfolio. As I mentioned earlier, it is never a good idea to simply buy a bunch of stocks and simply forget about them. Instead of simply buying and forgetting for years, investors have to buy and monitor them. I came across the following picture posted on twitter:

From the tweet:

In 2000, Fortune magazine came up with a ‘Buy-and-Forget’ portfolio – stocks that would last the decade. This is what the returns were like in 2012 after accounting for splits.Investing is hard.

The disastrous return of the above sample portfolio recommended by Fortune shows the need to be vigilant and monitor one’s investments. Moreover the portfolio is also heavy in tech stocks. So concentration risk is another risk that investors need to be aware of when building a portfolio for the long-term.
